Cricket....huh??

Here is the Story of an immense Cricket lover "boy" to an enormous Cricket hater "Man"...
I remember my days in Gowaikar Bldg.(the Apartment where we used to live until my 10th Std got over). We had a group of 4-5 enthu guys who were literally cricket freaks!! Truly living to the slogan of "Eat cricket,Slip Cricket"..every evening after finishing off our homeworks(may be sometimes even before that)we used to gather. Shifting vehicles in society parking(deciding tale-light of some vehicle as our stump :P ) ,deciding rules of getting out(be it 1 tup or hitting some glass) was our routine. After that would start a game .. ..the form of cricket we used to play is popularly known as "Galli Cricket"..(galli stands for Lane). The game would be played as if we were playing at an international level;with Strategies, agendas etc. Most of us did'nt have cable connection at our home. So,some Cricket lover fellow who has the used to be our hot destination on the day of Cricket match. Let India be involved in that match or not,we never used to miss any.
When I entered high school I joined "Swa"-Roopwardhini, a social organization working for the welfare of community through an amazing combination of discipline and social bonding.I started playing "Indian" games like Kabaddi,Kho-kho there. Our organization is on the similar lines of RSS in building the community. As its timings used to be 6pm-8.30pm,it would keep me busy completely after my school which would be over by 5.15pm.Our Cricketing then restricted to weekends. From 9th Standard onwards,it almost stopped because of pressure of studies. But, I was still preserving the longing for Cricket matches. And to make the situation worse, world cup 2003 came exactly at the time of our 10th Board exams. And for a change,India had its dream run to the finals. But alas!! I missed most of the performances.
People say that 9th-10th standard is the age of getting matured.I used to read newspaper articles, some magazines, watch TV debates.I used to be very angry with those anti-Cricket people. But, I started giving deeper thoughts to the subject. And at that time the match fixing issue was coming up. South African captain and one of my favourite players Hansi Cronje was convicted for match-fixing. Similarly Ajay Jadeja,Manoj Prabhakar,Azaruddin were charged on the similar grounds. I could not believe all that. How can they do that? Why will anyone do that?
Is money more important for them than their country's pride and honour? Is it the only ultimate aim?Are they not satisfied with the handsome amount they make by playing their natural game?
So many questions unanswered!!!
In this Cricket-crazy country , freaks literally forget their office-work,school,college and stick to "Idiot Box" for 8 hours just to see their fellow countrymen playing. What is the use of all this??After spending this much time of ourself, wasting productivity of our company/organization when we come to know that all this was predecided/fixed..Who will give back the time??who will compensate for the loss???
Our patriotism is invoked only when India is playing against Pakistan in a Cricket match . Where is it when our jawans are dying at the border just to make "us" live a peaceful life??How many people are there who go to their Offices for Flag-hoisting on 15th August or 26th January??These days are nothing but "Holidays" for them. Is this "Temporary patriotism" of any use?Of course not!!!
One more issue that is currently being discussed is the "fame" associated with cricketers. Today's Cricketers are not just Cricketers. They are models and brand ambassadors for various products.Their earning from Ad films will be even more than what they earn by playing Cricket!! So why will anyone play seriously when such a nice source of income is already available??
So how feasible it is to waste our time watching how these fellows are screwing up on playground??
Let's take the example of Sporting extravaganza "Olympics". India's performance at Olympics has always been a bone of contention . World's 2nd most populous country barely gets a medal there. This truly brings shame not just to sportspersons attending the olympics but to the whole nation. It's true that we are lacking the infrastructure and the kind of guidance required for creating Olympic winners in our country but is this the only thing? Certainly not!! The main motive is people'd desire. In India as per my observation the very first outdoor game any child learns is Cricket.Everybody wants to be Sachin Tendulkar or Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Hardly anybody will say that "I want to be Dhyanchand" or "Vishwanathan Anand". It's not that Cricket is a bad game and it should be banned. But, what I feel is we should give emphasis on other games also. There are many Desi games like Kabaddi ,Kho-Kho ,Kushti(Wrestling) which help individuals to develope strategic thinking. They help to build their physique more than do Cricket. They keep one fit and fine. But , it all requires paying attention to other games and divert at least a little bit from Cricket.
China has set a great example by toppling US from Olympics top place. They have proved to the world how hardwork ,dedication and strong will pays off.India has certainly improved its performance to give the best shot ever by winning 3 medals including 1st ever Gold medal.
This shows that people are getting conscious about other sports also. We certainly have the potential and talent to prove ourselves at world level. Just the talent needs to be identified early and nurtured properly with all the basic necessities..Then ours' is the world and everything that's in it !!!
